Tim is a founder member, Director and Chair of Substance and Professor of the Sociology of Sport and Popular Culture at Sheffield Hallam University. He has a specialist interest in young people, sport and popular culture and a long track record of conducting both ‘pure’ academic and applied research around these issues as well as tailored monitoring and evaluation exercises for specific policy initiatives.

His research and writing has focused particularly around young people’s personal development, ‘race’ and community cohesion, crime, ‘deviance’ and substance misuse and he currently leads the national evaluation of the Home Office funded Positive Futures programme and Chairs the Department for Education’s Information and Signposting Project Board.

With a succession of publications to his name, Tim is widely regarded as one of the leading authorities in relation to the research, development and analysis of sport and positive activity based social policy initiatives.
